Remember Me and I’ll Remember You
A Poem
Remember me as the warmth that surrounded you, for thirteen weeks,
1 day and a few hours
and how many seconds.
In return, I’ll remember you for what I
hoped and dreamed you’d be.
I’ll remember you as the star in a lonely black sky and the sun
on a cloudy day.
Remember me as the warm hand that rested on what would’ve
been your stomach,
but instead, it was mine.
I’ll remember the sound of a sonogram replicating your heartbeat,
but instead of black and white
I’ll imagine a vibrant array
of color.
Remember me as someone who was careful, and I’ll
remember you as the person
I protected.
Don’t remember me as the sad person
you’d feel shake with
you inside, but remember me
as the to-be mother that would
dance late at night, waiting
for your anticipated arrival.
I’ll remember you as someone who could’ve danced and sang along,
whether it be on car rides, in living rooms
or at birthday parties
we’d have yet to plan
and never be able to celebrate.
Remember me as someone who had the ability to plan
life for someone who had
not yet started theirs.
I’ll remember you as life,
waiting to enter a life.
Remember me as someone who would’ve taken you
to perfect and happy places,
and someone who’d create an adventure
just for you.
I’ll remember you as the list of names I keep at the
back of a notebook, figuring out which ones sounded
better no matter the context.
I’ll remember you like the names that had the most meaningful
connotations to them and wonder
if they’d suit the rare and exciting person
you had yet to become.
Remember me as someone who’d love to read you countless
stories with happy endings,
and I’ll remember you being part of my
happy ending.
