Contradictory
A Poem
“You can be such a paradox, always so insecure
in everything you say, do or think.
Yet you make love to yourself to a point
of self-absorption.
One moment you’re charming and the next
it’s as though you’ve taken back every
single word you’ve said.
You’re a trainwreck.
I could tell you how I’m totally
and utterly,
uncontrollably and unconditionally,
in love with you.
Yet you question my motives.
You can blame your mother’s vanity,
your father’s flaws,
but no matter how many times you dye your hair,
change your name,
your style,
your address…
You’re still a portrait of them”.
I look at him, he’s angry at me
for all the right reasons.
I know before I have to see it,
he’s got his bags packed
ready at the front door.
I don’t know how to fix it,
without wrapping my legs
around his waist.
I don’t know what to say,
other than “stay, please”.
When he finally leaves,
his bags in the boot of his car
as he drives away.
I know finally,
that I’ve seen this story before.
